Abstract |
Rapid methods are described for identifying and measuring iodine-131, strontium-89, and strontium-90 in milk by chemical separation combined with counting. The use of multichannel gamma spectroscopy is outlined for determining the gamma-emitting radionuclides cesium-137, iodine-131, and barium-140 in milk. The method for iodine-131 yield determinations within 2 to 3 hours, and is designed to measure concentrations of 100 micro-micro-curies/1. The radio-strontium procedure permits analyses of several samples simultaneously in about 5 hours; recovery in tracer studies was found to be 80 plus or minus 5%. The gamma spectroscopy determination is estimated to have accuracy of plus or minus 5-10 micro-micro-curies/1 between 0 and 100 micro-micro-curies/1, and plus or minus 5-10% at higher concentrations.
