Abstract |
The 15-acre Hranica Landfill site is an inactive landfill 21 miles north of Pittsburgh, in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The site is in a rural agricultural setting with 4,000 people residing within a two-mile radius of the site. Between 1966 and 1974, both municipal and industrial wastes were accepted onsite including paint and solvent wastes, plating wastes, metal sludge, and waste oils. The wastes were incinerated and/or stored onsite in surface impoundments until 1981. The first operable unit Record of Decision addresses the soil contamination in the ash pile area and other areas where the lead concentration exceeds the background range. The selected remedial action for this site includes repairing the 29,000-square foot ash pile cover, capping other areas where lead contamination exceeds 300 mg/kg; monitoring ground water and surface water. |
