Abstract |
The Dorney Road Landfill site is located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The site is approximately 27 acres, bounded on the east by Dorney Road, and extends westward such that the southwest corner is in Longswamp Township, Berks County. Beginning in 1952, an abandoned iron mine pit on the site was used as an open dump. From 1966 to 1978, an unpermitted landfill was operated in the same mine pit. In 1986, EPA conducted a removal action and regraded the landfill to prevent runoff and erosion of landfill material from migrating to neighboring property. In 1980 and 1982, EPA investigations revealed elevated levels of VOCs, metals and phenols in ground water and leachate samples. The remedial action will prevent dermal contact and incidental ingestion of landfill soil and solid waste. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil, ground water and surface water are VOCs including benzene, toluene and xylenes, metals including arsenic and chromium, and other organics including phenol and PAHs. The selected remedial action for the site is included. |
