Abstract The selective retention of benthic invertebrates by sieves of various mesh sizes was demonstrated by Jonasson (1955, 1958) who reported that decreasing the mesh opening from 0.62 to 0.51 mm (effective decrease on one-third mesh opening area) resulted in samples with an average of 47% more Tanypus chironomid larvae. Sieve mesh size was also found to be highly selective toward oligochaetes of particular size ranges. Studies supported Jonasson's findings that the head capsule width of chironomid larvae governed their retention.
