Abstract Embryo and larvae of rainbow trout, lake trout, channel catfish, bluegill, white sucker, northern pike, and walleye were exposed for 60 days after hatch to lead and chromium in soft water. Brook trout, channel catfish, and walleyes were also exposed for 60 days after hatch to copper and cadmium in soft and hard water. The effects on survival and growth indicated that copper and cadmium were toxic at much lower concentrations than lead and chromium. Water hardness did not appear to have a significant effect on the observed toxicity in most cases.
