Abstract |
This report outlines a general methodology for estimating emission rates of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from vegetation, soil/leaf litter, and surfaces of bodies of water. Techniques are prescribed for sample collection and analysis as well as for extrapolating the emission rates determined to estimate biogenic VOC emissions over any area. Emission factors are presented for broad classes of vegetation and for the major biotic regions in the conterminous U.S. Emission inventory procedures are illustrated by using emission factors to develop an example annual VOC emission inventory for the U.S. This nationwide emission inventory indicates that most biogenic VOC emissions can be expected during the summer months. In general, vegetation emits much larger quantities of VOC than does either leaf litter or water surfaces. Isoprene and various terpenes comprise the bulk of all vegetation emissions. |
