Abstract Personal, indoor, and outdoor concentrations of inhalable particles and 15 elements were measured for a probability sample of 178 persons representing 139,000 nonsmoking residents of Riverside, California. Newly designed personal monitors were employed. Personal exposures often exceeded concurrent indoor and outdoor concentrations, both for particles and for 14 of 15 associated elements. The increase appears to be due to personal activities such as dusting, vacuuming, cooking, and sharing a home with a smoker. This suggests that reduction of dust levels in the home could decrease exposure to airborne particles.
