Abstract The report gives results of a high-resolution mass spectrometric investigation to determine the major polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs) in samples derived from various fuel conversion processes and related plant emissions. Studied were particulate materials and extracts of hydrocarbons in the particulate materials collected on filters placed in flue gas streams from coking, smelting, and similar industrial operations. The analysis considered 14 highly carcinogenic PNAs, with nine unique formulas. Additional quantitative data were obtained by low ionizing voltage techniques for major aromatic hydrocarbon classes, where possible. The gases evolved from the particulate samples were also identified.
