Abstract The catalog of Industrial Process Profiles for Environmental Use was developed as an aid in defining the environmental impacts of industrial activity in the United States Entries for each industry are in consistent format and form separate chapters of the study. The carbon black industry is a distinctive part of the chemical industry, which processes hydrocarbon feedstocks (mainly heavy oils) into finely divided carbon black particle for use largely in tires and, to a lesser extent, pigments, cement, and cosmetics. The industry sole products are various grades of carbon black. Two industrial process flow diagrams and four process descriptions have been prepared to characterize the industry. Within each process description available data have been presented on input materials, operating parameters, utility requirements and waste streams. Data related to the subject matter, including feedstock characteristics, company listings and atmospheric emissions are included as appendices.
