Abstract This paper describes a simulation model that provides a quantitative system utilizing established relationships from soil chemistry to predict the most likely effect of rainfall acidity on the leaching of cations from noncalcareous soils. The model utilizes the relationships between lime potential (pH - 1/2pCa) and base saturation. The equilibrium between CO2 partial pressure and H(+) and HCO3(-) in solution, the apparent solubility product of AL(OH)3, the equilibrium of cations and anions in solution, the Freundlich isotherm description of sulfate adsorption, and mass balance considerations, to predict the distribution of ions between the solution and sorbed or exchangeable phases. Ionic composition of leachates in response to rainfall composition can thus be computed. Ions considered in the present version are H(+), Ca(2+), Al(+3), SO4(-2), Cl(-) and HCO3(-).
