Abstract Although sediments generally are considered to provide beneficial effects in terms of water quality movement through the 'sorption' of pollutants from the water column, contaminated sediments also may result in adverse effects. The interactions of both metals and organic contaminants with suspended and bed sediments significantly affects the transport and transformation of these pollutants in streams and lakes. Information about these interactions is important in assessing hazards of pollutant exposure in freshwater systems. In the paper, research into the fate and transport of sediment-associated contaminants is reviewed.
