Abstract This report is a review of the available information on the commercially important one- and two-carbon saturated fluorocarbons (i.e., fluoromethanes and fluoroethanes) pertinent to an assessment of the potential environmental hazard posed by these compounds. Aspects discussed are production, uses, environmental effects and biological effects. Major topics are the potential stratospheric ozone depletion effect from continued emissive uses of certain fluorocarbons and the cardiovascular effects resulting from inhalation of these compounds.
