Abstract |
Zoogloea-producing bacteria are common in natural waters and appear to be able to survive and grow in the presence of rather high concentrations of contaminants. They have been isolated consistently from oxidative waste treatment systems where they have been reported to cause a rapid decrease in the biochemical oxygen demand. Our interest in these organisms is centered upon the unique properties of the zoogleal material surrounding the cells. It is lacking in nonzoogloea-forming organisms. Studies have been made of several of these bacteria and their ability to concentrate several metallic ions. (Author) |
