The paper gives results of an evaluation of innovative ink feed systems for the flexographic and gravure printing industries. The evaluation is part of an investigation and assessment of pollution prevention strategies involving ink-handling systems used in certain segments of the printing industry. Ink-handling systems include all steps as the ink is transported from a storage area to the substrate. Possible ink-handling processes include ink-mixing operations, transport of ink to the press, movement of ink from the sump to the printing cylinders by means of an ink feed system, and the actual printing operation in which the ink is transferred from the printing cylinder to the substrate. Modifications to the flexographic and gravure ink feed systems may potentially provide many benefits. Potential environmental benefits include reduced fugitive emissions, reduced emissions from cleaning solvents, and reduced amounts of hazardous waste. Benefits to the printer include savings from reduced purchases of diluent solvent and cleaning solvent as well as reduced hazardous waste disposal costs. In addition, many of these modifications will allow printers to better control their printing operations and achieve higher quality results. |
