Abstract |
Protocols for environmental fate testing of chemicals that are of interest to the Office of Toxic Substances have been divided into five levels of increasing complexity and cost: (1) review and evaluation of available information, (2) development of any missing physical parameters, (3) screening tests, (4) intermediate tests, and (5) detailed laboratory or field tests. Chlorobenzene is used as an example to determine the types of tests to be run. The level of testing required should be based upon the quantity of the chemical being released to the environment, toxicity (if known), and a cost/benefit analysis. |
