The verification test will be conducted under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program. It will be performed by Battelle, which is managing the ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems (AMS) Center through a cooperative agreement with EPA. The scope of the AMS Center covers verification of monitoring technologies for contaminants and natural species in air, water, and soil. This verification test will evaluate a field sampler that provides air samples for quantitative measurement of the releasability of asbestos from soil in situ. The objective of the verification is to test the ability of the Releasable Asbestos Field Sampler (RAFS) to measure the emission rate from soil (asbestos structures/sec), and the asbestos concentration released from soil (asbestos structures per cubic centimeter (cc) of air). This will be accomplished by generating data for performance parameters that will assess the ability of the asbestos sampler through laboratory testing with asbestos-fortified soil samples and field testing for direct comparison with activity-based sampling (ABS). The performance parameters for this test are accuracy, reproducibility, comparability, variability/consistency, and a number of operational factors defined in Section B. |
