The Wells G&H site encompasses 330 acres within the zone of contribution of two municipal drinking water wells known as Well G and Well H, commonly referred to as Wells G&H, in Woburn, Massachusetts. The Aberjona River flows through the site, and a substantial onsite wetlands area is associated with the river's floodplain. Wells G&H were developed in the 1960s and provided over one quarter of the Woburn community water supply. In 1979 the State closed the wells and provided the community with an alternate water supply after detecting several chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the wells. EPA investigations beginning in 1981 resulted in the site being divided into three discrete operable units. Between 1983 and 1989 EPA issued several Administrative Orders to site property owners requiring cleanup activities including limiting site access and removing drums and debris. This Record of Decision (ROD) addresses remediating contaminated soil and groundwater found at the first operable unit, the five properties identified as principal sources of contamination, and further evaluating the remaining operable units. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil, sludge, debris, and groundwater are VOCs including PCE and TCE; other organics including carcinogenic PAHs (cPAHs), PCBs, and pesticides; and metals including lead. The selected remedial action for this site are included. |
