Abstract |
This program was conducted to establish the technical feasibility of codisposal of filtered sludge cake from primary and secondary wastewater treatment with municipal refuse in the PUROX System; to determine the environmental effect of this process; and to estimate the economics of sludge disposal in this fashion. At the PUROX System demonstration plant in South Charleston, West Virginia, operation at dry sludge-to-refuse ratios up to 0.075 was obtained. System performance was similar to that obtained with refuse only. Environmental effects were within Federal guidelines for emissions. Economics were found to be strongly influenced by site-specific factors with sludge disposal costs varying from less than $20 per Mg to above $100 per Mg of dry sludge. |
