Abstract | 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) is one of the most toxic and environmentally stable tricyclic aromatic compounds belonging to chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins. 2,3,7,8-TCDD has been demonstrated to be teratogenic in rats, mice and rabbits, and feticidal in monkeys. The major toxic signs and terata observed were cleft palate in mice, edema, hemorrhage, and kidney anomalies in rats and extra ribs in rabbits. Some epidemiological studies have indicated a possible teratogenic effect in humans, but the evidence is not sufficient to reach a firm conclusion. |
