Abstract |
The presence of small amounts of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNA) in many areas of the environment has focused attention on the development of improved analytical measurements for their determination. The major source of PNA in the environment is the incomplete combustion of coal and other fuels. However, there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate that trace amounts of PNA are synthesized by naturally occurring organisms. The purpose of the research was to develop a method for the determination of trace amounts of PNA present in natural water. The analytical scheme used included: Continuous liquid-liquid extraction of 5 liters of water with n-pentane followed by concentration; Removal of interfering substances; Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) of the concentrated eluent to separate the individual PNA; and Quantitative fluorescence analysis of the separated compounds. A gas chromatographic-mass spectrographic technique is also discussed. |
