Abstract |
This document establishes Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for nitrogen and phosphorus in Still Pond Creek. Still Pond Creek drains directly into the Chesapeake Bay and is part of the Upper Eastern Shore Tributary Strategy Basin. The creek is impaired by the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus, which cause excessive algal blooms, and may contribute to hypoxia. The water quality goal of these TMDLs is to reduce high chlorophyll a concentrations (a surrogate for algal blooms) and to maintain the dissolved oxygen criterion at a level whereby the designated uses for Still Pond Creek will be met. The TMDL was determined using the WASP5.1 water quality model. Maximum loads for total nitrogen and total phosphorus entering Still Pond Creek are established for both low flow and average annual flow conditions. As part of the TMDL analysis, the model was used to investigate seasonal variations and to establish margins of safety that are environmentally conservative. |
