Abstract |
The purpose of this guidance manual is to present the most recent information and techniques for use in preparing total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) when excessive biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), low dissolved oxygen (DO), and excessive nutrients and eutrophication impair the water quality of streams and rivers. The objectives of the manual are (1) to emphasize the needs of water quality managers to adequately consider the key water quality interactions and ecological responses to both point and nonpoint source loadings in streams and rivers; (2) to provide technical guidance on modeling, reaction rate coefficients, and field measurement techniques; and (3) to provide the recommended TMDL procedures for biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients for point sources discharging into streams and rivers. |
