Abstract |
The Charles George Land Reclamation Trust Landfill (CGLRT) site is a 69-acre landfill located in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts about 30 miles northwest of Boston and 4 miles south of Nashua, New Hampshire. From 1955 until 1971, the site was operated as a municipal dump. In 1973, CGLRT was issued a permit by the Massachusetts Division of Water Pollution control to handle hazardous wastes in addition to municipal and domestic refuse. Disposal of hazardous wastes and substances, primarily in the form of drummed and bulk chemicals containing volatile organics and toxic metal sludges, continued from January 1973 to at least June 1976. The exact quantity of hazardous substances disposed at the site is unknown. Records submitted by the landfill operators and other available information show that at least 2,500 cubic yards of chemical waste material were landfilled and over one-thousand pounds of mercury were disposed of at the site. |
