Abstract |
Chemical dispersants are one of the tools available to oil spill response personnel to control the spread of an oil slick. The manual presents information from the literature relative to dispersant effectiveness, toxicity and other environmental factors, regulatory and administrative considerations, application methods, the dispersant use decision process, and some practical considerations for dispersant use. It is meant to be a neutral presentation on the benefits and disadvantages associated with dispersant use in marine waters. Numerous documents have been published on the fate and effects of chemically dispersed oil, the effectiveness of chemical dispersants, application techniques for dispersants, and criteria for deciding whether to use dispersants. |
