Abstract |
Four categories of Dermatotoxicity testing are examined: Dermal Irritation Sensitization, Systemic Toxicity, and Phototoxicity. The rabbit is most widely used for irritation; the guinea pig is also acceptable, as its sensitivity is comparable. Factors affecting dermal irritation include: the degree of occlusion, use of abrasion, the application site, and duration of exposure and observation. This review suggests a tier-like strategy utilizing pH limits and preliminary screening in the hairless mouse may be useful in evaluating irritation potential. |
