Abstract |
Yellow to brown colored organic substances in natural waters are usually considered to be humic substances. If humic substances which accumulate in the sea are of marine origin, then what is the fate of the colored materials in fresh water entering the sea. Although it is generally believed that much of the materials transported to the sea are precipitated in the mixing zone, there appears to be no other field data which show that this material is rapidly removed from seawater. The purpose of the study was to find data on the properties of the colored organic materials in these waters and to show their removal when mixed with seawater. The possible role of humates in complexing and concentrating trace metals was also investigated. |
