Abstract |
This paper describes the results of emissions testing on one hundred 1975-76 Model Year vehicles in California conducted by the U.S. EPA from March 1977 to Jan. 1978. The vehicles were moderate-mileage models of three major domestic manufacturers. Each was obtained randomly from private individuals and was subject to a series of tests before and after various stages of tune-up. The findings confirm the poor initial pass-rate of in-use vehicles and the ultimate ability of most vehicles to meet their applicable standards once maladjustments and disablements have been corrected. In comparing these results with those of 49 state vehicles in an identical program, the California vehicles exhibited lower absolute emission levels but were quite similar when displayed in relation to their more stringent standards. |
