Abstract |
The problem of determining optimal regulation policies for single and multi-reservoir systems is considered. The optimal policies are analytically characterized in terms of certain critical numbers for which upper and lower bounds are obtained. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived in the case of a single reservoir for the optimal policies for the finite horizon problem to be also optimal for the infinite planning horizon. These analytical characterizations lead to substantial savings in computation time needed to solve large problems. Numerical results are presented using the theoretical results developed in this report as well as for a reservoir system in California. |
