Abstract |
The objective of the project was to demonstrate and evaluate two alternative refuse storage and collection container systems for small isolated rural areas, with special emphasis on costs, workability, and community acceptance. The test area for the project is to be the southern one-third of Humboldt County, California, with a population of approximately 10,000 people. In the first system, waste will be deposited in a 40-cu-yd, roll-off container that can be picked up and hauled to the central sanitary landfill. In the second system, waste will be deposited in 8-cu-yd containers. These containers will be emptied at the site into a 42-cu-yd collection vehicle that will then proceed to the next container site or, if full, to the landfill. The interim report details the selection of collection equipment (both containers and vehicles) components, and the development of test procedures for evaluating the storage and collection systems. |
