Abstract | Floating blue-green algae predominate in Clear Lake during most of the algal growing season. They are subject to concentration by gentle winds which can drive intense concentrations of algae into relatively small areas. Algal concentrations in these scums may vary between 1000 mg and 20,000 mg per liter surface water (1-5 cm deep). Because of this natural flotation and wind-induced concentration only about 2 percent of Clear Lake's surface need be skimmed throughout the algal growing season to decrease the average level of floating algae in the lake. The annual cost of building and operating a single skimming station would be about $50,000 to $60,000. New information on algal scum characteristics have been incorporated into the design of a third pickup unit (The U.C. Surface Skimmer) which is now being constructed. Testing and evaluation of the unit will be conducted in Clear Lake. The economic analysis presented is contingent upon the successful functioning of this unit. |
