Abstract | The community of organisms, the benthos, which inhabit aquatic sediments interact with biological and chemical components of the water column by processing detritus, recycling inorganic nutrients, mixing sediments, and serving as a principal food source for fish, waterfowl, and riparian mammals. Studies of the effects of acidic precipitation on this community have begun only in the past few years. |
