Abstract |
The objectives were to determine why state statutes and local zoning ordinances are not effectively used in floodplain management, to determine alternative preventive methods available and to analyze the alternatives to determine their suitability for management purposes. The objectives were only partly achieved within the time frame of the study. A repository of enabling legislation, information and inventory reports and ordinances relating to floodplains has been established for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Ohio. This can be used for monitoring and evaluating changes in regulations and management procedures. An analysis of the floodplain regulations in these five states is presented.
