Abstract | The report provides an introduction to U.S. and Canadian systems of government as well as an overview of the major environmental agencies and laws in Washington and British Columbia. It summarizes the regulations and policies regarding different aspects of water quality and resource management, and highlights differences and similarities between the programs implemented. Final sections of the report feature existing transboundary cooperative agreements and recommend other areas in which additional cooperative efforts would benefit environmental management in both nations. This report provides comprehensive overviews of numerous environmental topics (i.e., point source discharges, dredging, wetlands protection and environmental monitoring, to name a few) and provides the names of contacts in both countries for those readers who may need additional information on specific topics. 'Beyond the Border' seeks to provide the reader with the appropriate background to investigate, understand and work toward solving regional environmental problems. |
