Abstract | This report summarizes the environmental transport and transformation of polychlorinated biphenyls and contains nine separate chapters describing water solubility and octanol/water partition coefficient, vapor pressure, Henry's law constant and volatility from water, adsorption (sorption) to soils and sediments, bioconcentration in fish, atmospheric oxidation, hydrolysis and oxidation in water, photolysis, and biodegradation. In the preparation of each of these chapters, the emphasis has been on obtaining experimental data on environmentally relevant rate constants and equilibrium constants for these processes/properties for individual PCB congeners and Arochlors. If no experimental data were found, then estimation techniques were used wherever possible to obtain values for the rate constants or equilibrium constants for each individual congener or for groups of congeners (i.e., for monochloro-, dichloro-, trichloro-, etc., biphenyls). It must be emphasized that these estimates of rates for transport and transformation involved simplifying assumptions and thus these data should not be regarded as precise but rather as a best estimate based on the available data. |
