Abstract | Historically, some organic and inorganic compounds have been considered serious environmental threats from the standpoint of quantity produced, bioaccumulation, toxicity, or adverse environmental effects. This paper documents selected examples of known introductions of toxic chemicals into marine and estuarine environments and describes how habitat differences affect biodegradation potential. Concerns regarding release of genetically altered organisms into these environments also are discussed. |
