Abstract |
The agouti locus on chromosome 2 in the house mouse regulates the cyclic pattern of eumelanosome and phaeomelanosome (black and yellow pigment granules, respectively) and in the hair bulb. A dominant mutation at the A(viable yellow) locus results in a mouse with increased susceptibility for formation of strain-specific neoplasms, a mottled yellow coat color, and adult-onset obesity. A study of the specific function of this mutation in facilitating development of neoplasia in response to lindane (gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane) exposure in obese mottled yellow A(variable yellow)/a, lean pseudoagouti A(variable yellow/a, and lean black a/a (YS X VY) F-1 hybrid female mice is described. Incidences of Clara cell hyperplasia and prevalences of hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas are discussed. |
