Abstract | Guides for brief, intermittent exposure to nitrogen oxides have been compiled and presented. The oxides of greatest concern are nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and nitrogen pentoxide. Toxicological data is presented on these. Factors and conditions that can, modify and significantly alter human response to nitrogen dioxide are discussed. The most important ones are; temperature, predisposing disease, heredity, age and, interactions to other environmental pollutants. Values for short term exposure to NOx are tabulated. Experimental data on humans and laboratory animals exposed to NO2 are included in the appendices. (APCO abstract) |
