Abstract | An experimental, continuous-flow bioassay apparatus was designed to utilize and stabilize salt water derived from an estuarine source. The prototype was constructed to provide a single-test supply of up to 8 liters of water per minute at 4 levels of selected temperature and a near-constant concentration of any selected salinity or dissolved oxygen. Called the 'Saltwater Environment Simulator', this apparatus is intended for use in evaluating pollution effects and natural environmental changes on marine and estuarine animals. The experimental procedure is described and illustrated with drawings of the simulator. Tests indicate that controlled environmental conditions can be provided to define some of the physiological requirements of test animals living under estuarine conditions that can be related to ecological field studies. |
