Abstract |
This report describes a statistical review of the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Stream Acidification Monitoring Program (SAMP). The SAMP program was developed from the Maryland Synoptic Stream Chemistry Survey (MSSCS) which was conducted by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in the spring of 1987. The statistical analyses described in this report as part of an evaluation of the MDE SAMP. In particular, estimates of variability based on data from the MDE SAMP program were compared to similar estimates from three other stream surveys: the MSSCS, the 1993 Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) Pilot Study conducted by DNR, and the 1994 MBSS also conducted by DNR. In addition, appropriate statistical estimation procedures that can be applied to data from the SAMP program were developed. Estimates of average water quality values and trends in water quality for the period of sampling (1990-1995 in the Appalachian Plateau 1991-1995 for the Northern Coastal Plain and Southern Coastal Plain) were calculated based on these procedures. |
