Abstract | To appraise the potential for success of future American composting operations, a study of compost utilization and compost utilization research in Germany, Switzerland, and Holland was undertaken in 1966 and 1967. During the investigation, 14 European plants were toured. Data were collected on the processing of refuse into compost, and on compost markets, plant equipment facilities, and procedures. Based on these observations, possible uses of compost in the United States are suggested. In Europe, a limited percentage of domestic refuse is composted because production costs and marketing problems make it impractical to produce more compost than can be sold. (Author) |
