The research reported was undertaken to help determine best methods of disposal of poultry wastes and to determine the magnitude of the beef cattle feedlot problem. Laboratory and field studies were made to determine the effect of methods of application and handling poultry manure upon nitrate and other nutrients in the soil and microbial changes during decomposition. A survey of soil at 21 beef cattle feedlots indicated that ground water contamination from the feedlots would probably not be significant but that contamination from surface runoff would possibly present a greater pollution hazard.
