Abstract |
As part of the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) demonstrated the Peroxidation Systems, Inc. (PSI), perox-pure chemical oxidation treatment system. The SITE demonstration was conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Site 300 in Tracy, CA. Over a 3-wk period in September 1992, about 40,000 gal of groundwater contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE), tetrachloroethene (PCE), and other volatile organic compounds (VOC) was treated in the perox-pure system. The perox-pure system achieved TCE and PCE removal efficiencies greater than 99.7% and 97.1%, respectively. Potential sites for applying this technology include Superfund and other hazardous waste sites where groundwater or other liquid wastes are contaminated with organic compounds. Economic data indicate that groundwater remediation costs could range from about $7 to $11/1,000 gal depending on contaminated groundwater characteristics. Of these costs, perox-pure system direct treatment costs could range from about $3 to $5/1,000 gal. |
