The effects of surface active materials on gas absorption were studied in reactive and nonreactive systems. Bacterial cell particles increase the mass transfer rate of oxygen in the oxidation of glucose. Direct uptake of oxygen by the cells, decrease in the film thickness, and local surface turbulence were demonstrated. The presence of surfactants retards the rise velocity for bubbles. Rise velocity of soluble bubbles in general is retarded by the simultaneous mass transfer process. A differential equation was derived to describe the phenomenon of a dissolving oxygen bubbles rising in a frozen lake. Parameters such as lake depth, temperature profile, BOD, and pollutant concentration are considered in dimensionless form. |
