Abstract |
The primary purpose of the report is to assist State, local and other agency personnel by describing methods that have been used in assessing multiple source, multiple pollutant risks from air toxics exposures in urban areas. The report does not constitute formal EPA guidance for conducting an urban risk assessment, nor does it recommend a single approach. Instead, it identifies techniques that others have elected to employ and offers insights that may assist the reader in selecting a particular set of techniques for use in a given locale. Major topics covered include (1) a summary of completed and ongoing urban air toxics assessment studies, (2) ambient monitoring assessment approaches, (3) emission inventory/dispersion modeling assessment approaches, (4) aspects of exposure and risk assessment, (5) control strategy evaluation, (6) data handling, and (7) evolving assessment technologies, including receptor modeling, personal monitoring and bioassay sampling. |
