Abstract |
This guide is intended to assist local governments with the unique aspects of redeveloping railfields and provide them the information they need to successfully work with rail companies. The guide is targeted at communities that are beginning to address a railfields project rather than those that are already grappling with the more complex issues involved with railroad property reuse. This guide provides a history of rail development, the regulatory framework governing rail companies and their properties, and the current landscape of underutilized rail properties. It also provides information on the rail companies perspective of railfields redevelopment, and relates stories of successful projects to give communities tools and approaches for addressing rail properties. The guide concludes with a directory of rail companies and contacts for redevelopment projects. |
