Abstract |
The exchange of material by convective cloud processes between the mixed layer and the overlying free troposphere is examined. The paper describes results of a field experiment that was conducted in Lexington, Kentucky during the period from July 20 to August 24, 1983 to study the processes associated with the vertical transport of acidic pollutants by nonprecipitating cumulus convection. To document the vertical transport, an SF6 tracer was released from an aircraft either within or above the mixed layer and sampled by another aircraft at various levels in and above the mixed layer as well as on the ground. The results show that pollutants from the boundary layer are transported into the cloud layer by fields of cumulus and the cloud dynamics also force cloud layer air into the mixed layer. |
