Abstract |
The Halogenated Organics Subcommittee of the Science Advisory Board's Environmental Health Committee completed its independent scientific review of the Draft Drinking Water Criteria Document for Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). The review was conducted in Washington, D.C. November 19-20, 1987. The major recommendation of the Subcommittee was that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explore whether the available data on PCB congeners can be developed on a scale of toxicity similar to the toxicity equivalency factor that the Agency had already prepared for dioxins. The efforts could potentially yield some scientifically interesting insights relating to uncertainties in the PCB data base even if it represents only an approximation in which data analysis and scientific judgement are combined. In general the Subcommittee concluded that the document suffers from a failure to clearly identify its scientific objectives. |
