The cost of hazardous waste handling, hauling and disposal is very high. As federal, state and local hazardous waste disposal requirements become more restrictive and as approved disposal sites fill up, the cost is likely to rise. It is possible for some industries such as those operating paint spray booths and oily wastewater treatment plants to minimize hazardous waste production by evaluating the materials used to destabilize and coagulate solids and oil in these systems. Laboratory and field trials indicate that by replacing traditional treatment chemicals used in these systems with organic polymers, significant reductions in hazardous waste generation may be achieved. |
