Abstract |
A simple method for the determination of mirex in the presence of polychlorobiphenyls (PCB's) is reported. The procedure depends on diethylamine-assisted photodegradation of interfering PCB's prior to measurement of the mirex by electron capture gas chromatography. An inexpensive 275-W sunlamp (spectral output greater than 280 nm) may be used as the irradiation source. Reductive dechlorination of the PCB results apparently through primary photoexcitation of the biphenyl, followed by hydrogen abstraction from both the alkyl and amino groups of the amine. The method has been successfully applied to human tissue extracts for the determination of mirex in the presence of Aroclor 1260 and other commonly occurring chlorinated pesticides. |
