Abstract | This volume evaluates the feasibility, costs, and pollutant removal effectiveness of street sweeping, stormwater detention and retention basins, and catch basins, and catchbasin cleaning. The applicability of these measures is demonstrated for three watersheds in southeastern Wisconsin. The level of pollution loading reduction achieved by street sweeping is relatively modest. Sweeping is most effective in spring and in fall, and in high density urban developments. Relatively high levels of pollutant removal can be achieved by retention basins or modified detention basins. The use of these basins was generally found to be more cost effective than increased street sweeping. |
